MDMA abuse is a dangerous and an unfortunately persistent problem in the United States. Also commonly referred to by a variety of slang terms including ecstasy, X, and molly, MDMA is a powerful psychoactive substance that increases energy, lowers inhibitions, enhances emotional openness and elicits an enhanced sensitivity to external stimuli. While these effects can be pleasurable, the reality of MDMA abuse is that individuals who engage in this behavior expose themselves to myriad immediate and long-term dangers, including chemical dependency.
At Duffy’s Napa Valley Rehab, we have decades of experience helping individuals overcome substance abuse and addiction, and we have developed specialized programming that can help men and women end their dependency on MDMA and learn to live healthier drug-free lives.
How to Help a Loved One
Helping a loved one get treatment for MDMA addiction
If someone that you care about has been abusing or has become dependent upon MDMA, you are right to be concerned. This is a potentially devastating problem that is likely to require professional treatment, but you can play an essential role in getting your friend or family member the help that he or she needs. Please consider the following:
- Learn about the signs, symptoms, and effects of MDMA abuse and addiction. Also, educate yourself about the disease of addiction in general. In order to best support your loved one, it is important for you to understand what he or she is experiencing.
- Research the types of treatment that have helped others who were struggling with MDMA abuse, and identify programs that offer the treatment options that match your loved one’s unique needs.
- Talk to your loved one. Express your concerns, share what you have learned, and most importantly, listen to what he or she has to say. Prepare for denial or even anger. Remember that your loved one is in crisis. Focus on getting help, not assigning blame.
- Volunteer to make appointments, provide transportation, arrange for childcare, and provide similar types of tangible support that can remove obstacles that may have been preventing your loved one from getting the treatment that he or she needs.
- Manage expectations. Overcoming a problem with MDMA may require a long-term effort that will involve both successes and setbacks. Prepare for an extended effort, and plan to be a source of support through it all.
Ultimately, the most important thing you can do for your loved one is to continue to be an informed positive presence in his or her life before, during, and after he or she is in treatment. Share knowledge, show compassion, and continue to provide tangible support as your loved one works to achieve long-term recovery.
Why Consider Treatment

Individuals who have been abusing MDMA may also injure themselves due to unsafe behaviors that result from diminished inhibitions and/or impaired cognition. Anxiety, depression, paranoia, and changes in brain structure and brain chemistry are among the long-term consequences of MDMA abuse.
